Establishment

1. Central African Republic Civil Wars

Is a series of related civil wars in the Central African Republic.

1.1. Third Central African Republic Civil War

Was a civil war that broke out in the Central African Republic initially between the Seleka-controlled Central African government and the Christian and Animist Anti-Balaka forces, loyal to the former preisdent François Bozizé. The civil war quickly developed into a conflict involving a multitude of different forces.

  • May 2017: MINUSCA retook most of Bangassou.
  • March 2018: UPC captured Rafai subprefecture.
  • March 2018: Anti-balaka recaptured Rafai.
  • December 2018: FPRC and UPC rebels took control of Bakouma.
  • November 2019: UPC entered Bambouti.
  • January 2021: Rebels took control of Bangassou.
  • May 2023: UPC rebels captured Kadjema near Mboki.
  • May 2024: FACA and their Russian allies have successfully captured town of Mboki, Zemio and Djemah from rebels.

1.1.1. Anti-Balaka Insurrection

Was the first phase of the Third Central African Civil War. The Christian and Animist Anti-Balaka forces, loyal to the former president François Bozizé, started an insurrection against the Seleka-controlled Central African government.

1.1.2. Central African Counterattack with foreign support

A military campaign of the Central African Government with foreign support to reconquer the territories controlled by rebel forces.

  • January 2021: Rebels withdrew from Bangassou.
  • October 2021: Central African Republic armed forces returned to Rafai after eight years of absence.
