1. World War II

Was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945 (it started sooner in certain regions) between the Axis Powers (mainly Germany, Japan and Italy) and the Allies (mainly the Soviet Union, the U.S.A., the U.K., China and France). It was the war with more fatalities in history. The war in Asia began when Japan invaded China on July 7, 1937. The war in Europe began when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. The war ended with the complete defeat of the Axis powers, which were occupied by the Allies.

1.1. World War II (All other Vichy France Colonies)

Refers to the events that happened in French Colonies that decided to be loyal to the German puppet state of Vichy France.

  • July 1942: British and British East African troops land on the island of Mayotte, in the Mozambique Channel, and secure it for seaplane base.

2. Secession of Anjouan and Moheli

Secession of Anjouan and Moheli from the Union of the Comoros.

  • January 1998: In 1997, the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli declared their independence from the Comoros.
  • January 1999: Mohéli did return to government control in 1998.
  • August 1999: In 1999, Anjouan had internal conflicts and on August 1 of that year, the 80-year-old first president Foundi Abdallah Ibrahim resigned, transferring power to a national coordinator, Said Abeid.

3. 2008 invasion of Anjouan

Was an amphibious assault led by the Comoros, backed by African Union (AU) forces, whose objective of the invasion was to topple Colonel Mohamed Bacar's leadership in Anjouan, an island in the Union of Comoros, when he refused to step down after a disputed 2007 election.

  • April 2007: In July 2007, Colonel Mohamed Bacar who was President of Anjouan, one of the three autonomous islands that make up the Union of the Comoros declared Anjouan to be independent of the Comoros.
  • March 2008: The invasion of Anjouan occurred on the early morning of 25 March 2008. The main towns were quickly overrun and the island was declared under the control of the invading forces the same day.

4. Further events (Unrelated to Any War)

  • July 1975: The Comorian parliament passed a unilateral resolution declaring independence.
  • October 1978: In 1978, president Ali Soilih, who had a firm anti-French line, was killed and Ahmed Abdallah came to power.
  • April 1999: Azali's coup.
