Mu'awiyah I was the fifth caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate, reigning from 661 to 680. He ruled over a vast empire that stretched from Spain to India, establishing his capital in Damascus. During his tenure, the most significant wars were the First Fitna (656-661), which led to his ascension to power, and the Second Fitna (680-692), which occurred after his death. These conflicts were internal struggles within the Muslim community, with the First Fitna resulting in the assassination of Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Second Fitna leading to the division of the caliphate into multiple factions.
