Is a country in Africa that occupies the whole island of Madagascar. In precolonial times the island was fragmented in several polities, Imerina being the largest of them. France united Madagascar into the Colony of French Madagascar by the early XX century. Madagascar gained its indepedency in 1960. Its actual consitution and name were adopted in 1975.
