Was one of the kingdoms that emerged from the Treaty of Verdun of 843 that divided the Frankish Empire among the surviving sons of the emperor Louis I, the son and successor of Charlemagne. The treaty was the first of the four partition treaties of the Carolingian Empire. These Partition Treaties were the Treaties of Verdun (843), PrĂ¼m (855), Meerssen (870), and Ribemont (880).
