Was one of the kingdoms that emerged with the Treaty of Prüm of 855, where the Emperor of Middle Francia, Lothair I, divided his domains among his three sons. The treaty was the second of the four partition treaties of the Carolingian Empire. These Partition Treaties were the Treaties of Verdun (843), Prüm (855), Meerssen (870), and Ribemont (880).
