Towards the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, Liu Bei, a warlord and distant relative of the Han imperial clan,conquered territories in present-day Hubei and Hunan and in present-day Sichuan and Chongqing. Afterwards, he proclaimed himself King of Hanzhong.
