Is a country in Southeast Europe. It is situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. Greece emerged as an independent country in 1832, after centuries of Ottoman domination over the Greek people. During Antiquity, Greece was divided into a multitude of poleis (city-states) and leagues. The whole of Greece was conquered by the Romans in the II and I century BC. The continuation of the Roman Empire in the east, the Byzantine Empire, was culturally and linguistically a Greek country, and a regional power. After being weakened by the Western European conquest in 1204, the Byzantine Empire was slowly absorbed by the Ottoman in the three following centures.
