Was a city-state under the protection of the League of Nations between 1920 and 1939, consisting of the Baltic Sea port of Danzig (now GdaĆsk, Poland) and surrounding areas. The country was in a customary union with Poland so that the Polish could have a large trading port, despites Danzig being predominantly German-populated. In fact, the Danzig and the Polish territory that separated Germany from East Prussia was a major cause of Germany's Invasion of Poland in 1939 that started World War II. Danzig was annexed by Germany shortly after.
