Greenland was formally under the Norwegian crown from 1261. However, the Norse settlements were slowly abandoned, possibly because of the climate changes caused by the Litte Ice Age. It is not clear when the last occupied settlement was abandoned. A European ship that landed in the former Eastern Settlement in the 1540s found only the corpse of a Norse men there.
