After the War of the Spanish Succession the Kingdom of Sicily, that was part of the Aragonese and then Spanish possessions since 1409, was controlled first by Savoy and then by Austria. The Kingdom of Naples conquered the island in 1734. It remained part of Naples (except for the Napoleonic period) until 1816 when Naples and Sicily were merged to form the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
