Is a country in East Asia. It constitutes the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. In 1910 whole Korea was annexed by Japan. After Japan's defeat in World War the Korean Peninsula was divided in a Soviet and an American occupation zone. The Soviet zone gained independency as the People's Committee of North Korea in 1947. It took its actual denomination in 1948.
