After the independence of French Tunisia, France retained control of the city of Bizerte and its naval base. After Tunisia tried to annex the city by force unsuccessfully in 1961, the UN Security Council pressured France to leave the territory. The French military finally abandoned Bizerte on 15 October 1963.
