1. Battle of Montaperti

Was a battle fought on 4 September 1260 between Florence and Siena in Tuscany as part of the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. The Florentines were routed. It was the bloodiest battle fought in Medieval Italy, with more than 10,000 fatalities.

• January 1251: Gavorrano submitted to the Municipality of Volterra.
• January 1270: The Republic of Siena conquers Monticiano.
• January 1321: The city of gavorrano is annexed by the Republic of Massa Marittima.
• January 1327: The city of Montieri is conquered by Republic of Siena.

Disestablishment

• January 1363: From 1340 to 1361, Volterra had been governed by a feudal-type government under the leadership of the local Belforti family. The progressive erosion of municipal liberties caused by the feudal government led to a civil war. Florence, taking advantage of this situation, intervened as a mediator and subjected Volterra to its hegemony.
