Establishment
- January 1214: In the 13th century, "marshals of Sondershausen" are known, who were feudal to the Thuringian landgrave from 1213 and from 1287 to the Archdiocese of Mainz.

Disestablishment
- January 1357: After the death of Heinrich V. von Hohnstein in 1356 without male heirs, the town became the property of the dynasty of counts (1697 princely) Schwarzburg, who developed Sondershausen as their seat.
