Is an independent city-state, microstate and enclave within Rome, Italy. Its predecessor, the Papal States, was a major regional power from its start in 729 AD to its conquest by the Kingdom of Italy in 1870. The Vatican City State became independent from Italy with the Lateran Treaty of 1929.
