Is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu. Independence from the United Kingdom was obtained in 1978.

Establishment

  • July 1978: Independence was obtained, and the name changed to just "Solomon Islands" (without the definite article), in 1978.
