Rhodesia had unilaterally declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 to become a white-only governed country. Under pressure from the international community, and due to the ethnical unrest caused by the minority rule, Rhodesia made an agreement with the black community and changed the name of the country into Zimbabwe-Rhodesia.

  • June 1979: The Republic of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia is declared on June 1, 1979.

Disestablishment

  • December 1979: The Lancaster House Agreement returned control of the country to Great Britain in preparation for the spring 1980 elections. So the country name was again Southern Rhodesia. Southern Rhodesia was a British Crown Colony from December 12, 1979 to April 17, 1980.
