Is an unrecognised de facto sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, still considered internationally to be part of Somalia.

Establishment

  • May 1991: After Barre's dismissal, the clashes between the rebels and the counter-revolutionaries, who were trying to re-establish Barre in power again, continued, leading to an increasingly violent and chaotic situation approaching a state of anarchy, especially in the south, to escape from which the north-western region of the country, Somaliland, declared itself independent.

1. Somali Civil War

Is an ongoing civil war in Somalia. It started in 1991 and includes several related phases. .

1.1. Lords of War Phase

Was a phase of the Somali Civil War where the country was divided by among de facto lords of war.

  • May 1991: After Barre's dismissal, the clashes between the rebels and the counter-revolutionaries, who were trying to re-establish Barre in power again, continued, leading to an increasingly violent and chaotic situation approaching a state of anarchy, especially in the south, to escape from which the north-western region of the country, Somaliland, declared itself independent.

1.2. Las Anod conflict

Is a conflict between Somaliland and the breakaway state of Khaatumo SSC.

  • February 2023: A declaration of independence was uploaded on social media stating the regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn rejected the rule of Somaliland. The Dhulbahante clan elders declared their intent to form a state named "SSC-Khatumo" within the framework of the Federal Government of Somalia.
  • February 2023: Somaliland forced started an attack to the city, with combat taking place around Hotel Hamadi in the east of the city
  • August 2023: On August 25, SCC-Khatumo forces launched an attack on Somaliland forces on the outskirts of Las Anod, capturing two bases held by the Somaliland Army in Maraaga and Gojacadde.
  • August 2023: SSC-Khatuno claimed its advance resulted in the capture of Dhuxun, Xargega, Golayeedhay, Canjiid, Adhi'adeye, Samakaab, Yagoori, Wadhake, and Guumays and their respective military bases.
