The Kingdom of Diarra (Jaara), also called Kingui, was polity in West Africa, founded by the Mandingos. Initially a vassal of Ouagadou, towards the end of the eleventh century, the Empire of Ouagadou weakened following the attacks of the Almoravids. Diarra took advantage of this to free itself from the domination of Ouagadou.

Establishment

  • January 1101: The Kingdom of Diarra, also called Kingui, is an ancient West African state, founded by the Mandingos. The vast kingdom of Diarra had under its authority several vassal states: Guidimakha, Diafounou, Kaarta, Kaniarémé, Guidioumé. Towards the end of the 11th century, the Empire of Ouagadou weakened following the attacks of the Almoravids. The Diarra took advantage of this to free itself from the domination of Ouagadou.

Disestablishment

  • January 1236: The Battle of Kirina (c. 1235), was a confrontation between the Sosso king Sumanguru Kanté and the Mandinka prince Sundiata Keita. Sundiata Keita's forces roundly defeated those of Sumanguru Kanté, guaranteeing the pre-eminence of Keita's new Mali Empire over Africa.
