Was a predecessor of the modern Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Statute of Westminster of 1931 largely granted Newfoundland independence from the United Kingdom. However, Newfoundland returned under British control in order to fight the Great Depression. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 to become Canada's tenth province.
