Establishment

• January 1001: Mitla was inhabited at least since the Classic Period (100-650 AD) and perhaps from as early as 900 BC. It began as a fortified village on the outer edge of the valley and later became the main religious center of the Zapotec. The Mixtec took control of the area around 1000 AD, although the area remained populated by many Zapotec.
