The Faroe Islands were colonized by the Norsemen that established an independent polity from ca. 800 AD.

Establishment

  • January 801: Norsemen settled the Faroes islands c. 800, bringing the Old West Norse language, which evolved into the modern Faroese language.

  • January 1036: Sigmundur Brestisson took possession of the Faroe islands for Olaf Tryggvason, King of Norway from 995 to 1000, annexing it in 1035.
