In 1514 the Ottoman corsair Hayreddin Barbarossa captured Algiers from Spain.

Establishment

  • January 1515: Called by the inhabitants of Algiers, the brothers Arudj and Khayr ad-Din landed in Jijel in 1514 and made the city their rear base.

1. Conquests of Suleiman I (Ottoman)

  • January 1522: An assembly made up of Algiers notables decided to submit Algeria to the Ottoman Empire.

2. Further events (Unrelated to Any War)

  • October 1516: Alger conquered by Hayreddin Barbarossa.
  • January 1517: Hayreddin Barbarossa conquered all the hinterland and western Algeria: Mitidja, Chelif, Titteri, Dahra and Ouarsenis.
  • January 1520: Before Ottoman help could arrive, the Spanish retook the city of Algiers in 1519.
  • January 1520: Kheireddine Barbarossa is proclaimed "Sultan of Algiers" between late October and early November 1519.

Disestablishment

  • January 1522: An assembly made up of Algiers notables decided to submit Algeria to the Ottoman Empire.
