An island country in Western Asia. It is situated on the Persian Gulf, and comprises a small archipelago made up of 50 natural islands and an additional 33 artificial islands, centered on Bahrain Island. In 1971, it declared independence. Formerly an emirate, Bahrain was declared an Islamic constitutional monarchy in 2002.
Establishment
- February 2002: As part of the adoption of the National Action Charter, Bahrain changed its formal name from the State (dawla) of Bahrain to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
