Was one of the many free medieval communes (practically city-states) of Italy. It was located in Lombardy.

Establishment

January 1001: During the communal period, Como was disputed between the rival families of the Rusca (or Rusconi) and the Vitani.

Was a conflict over the control of Insubria, Brianza and Valtellina in the early 12th century, fought between the comuni of Milan and Como.

August 1127: Ten-Year War: Annexation of Como, Lugano and part of Valtellina to the Commune of Milan.

Expansion during the rule of Azzone Visconti in the Signoria of Milan.

January 1336: In 1335, the Valtellina region was taken over by the Visconti family in Milan.

January 1005: Between 1002 and 1004 the Germanic sovereigns of Swabia ceded all the Bellinzona countryside to the bishop of Como.
January 1163: Como was rebuilt starting from 1158 and only recovered its independence under Federico I, known as Barbarossa, participating in the emperor's Italian military campaign which culminated in 1162 with the siege and destruction of the Lombard capital.
January 1250: The control over Lucarno and Lugano passed to Como.
January 1301: The Contado of Bormio maintained its independence for about three centuries from the X to XIII, when it came under the control of Como.
January 1341: With Azzone Visconti Como definitively entered the Visconti orbit.
January 1343: Milanese troops occupy Locarno.
January 1403: Upon the death of Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1402, Franchino II Rusca attempted to establish a personal lordship in Como.
