- January 558: In 557 Yuwen Tai's nephew Yuwen Hu deposed Emperor Gong and placed Yuwen Tai's son Yuwen Jue on the throne, ending Western Wei and establishing Northern Zhou.
- January 558: From 557 to 581 the Northern Zhou replaced the Western Wie as overlords of Western Liang.

- February 577: Northern Zhou destroyed rival Northern Qi in 577, taking over Northern Qi's territory.
- January 581: The three kingdoms of Yinping, Wudu and Wuxing were conquered by the Zhou Dynasty.
Disestablishment
- January 582: From 581 to 587 the Sui dynasty replaced the Northern Zhou as overlords of the Western Liang.
- January 582: In 581 Yang Jian seized the throne from Emperor Jing, establishing the Sui Dynasty.
