On 26 March 1811, Henri Christophe created a kingdom in the north of Haiti and was later proclaimed Henry I, King of Haïti.

- January 1808: Pétion became President of the "Republic of Haïti" in the south.
- October 1820: Haiti: Ill and infirm at age fifty-three, King Henry committed suicide by shooting himself with a silver bullet rather than risk a coup and assassination. His son and heir was assassinated 10 days later. King Henry was buried within the Citadelle Laferriere.
