- January 781: 781-782: Elpidius was a Byzantine noble, was appointed by Basilissa Irene of Athens governor of the Theme of Sicily, who was later accused of conspiracy against the empress. This led him to rebel, and after being defeated by Irene's imperial forces, he fled to the Abbasid Caliphate.
