  • January 289: As Roman authority became occupied elsewhere during the disastrous civil wars and disintegrations of the Crisis of the Third Century, local nomadic Berber tribes harassed settlements and occupied some of the border regions of Mauretania Tingitania and Mauretania Caesariensis. The incursions were seen as such a large threat that the Western Roman Emperor, Maximian, personally became involved in the conflict. Three berber tribes, the Bavares, Quinquegentiani and Fraxinenses, had formed a confederation. Though the berbers faced a defeat against the army raised by the governor of Mauretania Caesariensis, they soon returned.
